Patios are a valuable outdoor space

Bringing ‘the outside in’ is becoming an increasingly popular design choice for many families. Patios are once again ‘in vogue’ as a functional outdoor space, whether it is for entertaining, socialising or a space for children to play.

Driveways Glasgow has a burgeoning reputation for creating fabulous patio areas using a range of materials to suit every budget and requirement:

  1. Paving stones – many customers, when they think of paving stone, envisage pavements slabs arranged in a uniform, square pattern that looks and feels drab. Paving stones as a patio material has come on leaps and bounds since those early days!

Quality paving stones now come in a range of colours, that when use in a design can create an interesting pattern. Some patios built for Glasgow customers have seen them use different colours to ‘separate’ various areas within the patio area – marking out the BBQ area, for example, in red paving stones, the seating area in yellow paving stone.

Paving stones need very little maintenance, but are one material that does need to be laid correctly, on a flat, even surface. If the ground beneath is uneven, then paving stones can crack or lift, presenting a significant trip hazard.

  1. Concrete – this is a versatile material that again, with a little imagination at the design stage, can be used to create a functional and safe patio area. However, as with paving stones, this material needs to be handled and laid correctly. If it is not and water penetrates in to the concrete it will quickly crack and move, rendering the patio unsightly and useless for its intended use. Neither is concrete porous so there are drainage considerations. However, poured correctly, there is no maintenance and you have a great, functional outdoor space.
  2. Ceramic or porcelain tiles – can also be an option although they can be expensive and need to be laid correctly. However, if you want the WOW! factor then this is the material for you. With the advent of fantastic, wide –opening patio style doors, tiles can make a seamless transition on the floor from outside to inside (and vice versa!). The tiles that are used need to be specific ones, and able to withstand the rigours of Glasgow winters. Outside tiles, however, tend to be fairly slick so with children running and playing on them, this may not be the best material to prevent falls.

Driveways Glasgow has a growing gallery of ideas from recent completed jobs which they will be happy to share with you; hopefully inspiring you to create your perfect patio.
