How to Clean Artificial Grass
30 April 2025
Artificial grass is low maintenance, but it still needs a little care to keep it looking fresh all year round. Whether you’ve had yours installed for years or it’s brand new, regular cleaning will help maintain its colour, texture, and hygiene – especially during the wetter months here in Glasgow.
Start by giving it a good brush. Use a stiff broom or a plastic rake to remove leaves, dirt, and debris. Always brush against the grain to keep the fibres upright. For larger areas, a power broom or leaf blower can make the job much quicker.
Next, tackle any stains or spills. For light marks like muddy footprints or pet mess, warm soapy water usually does the trick. Just use a soft cloth or sponge and rinse with clean water. For tougher stains, a diluted vinegar solution or artificial grass cleaner can help – just avoid anything too harsh that could damage the fibres.
Pet owners should rinse regularly to keep odours at bay. A quick hose-down every week or two helps wash away residue, and you can buy pet-safe disinfectant sprays designed specifically for artificial lawns. If smells persist, sprinkle a little baking soda before rinsing.
Weeds shouldn’t be a big issue with properly installed artificial grass, but if any sneak through at the edges, pull them out by hand and top up the membrane or edging if needed. Avoid using weed killer directly on the grass, as some formulas can cause discolouration.
During the winter, keep an eye on any moss build-up. A light moss treatment (safe for artificial grass) can be applied and then gently brushed out. Try not to let leaves sit too long, as they can create damp patches and attract mould.
A clean artificial lawn not only looks better but feels better underfoot too. A few minutes of care now and then keeps it green, fresh, and ready to enjoy – no mud, no mowing, no hassle.
